The Lower School

The BB&N Lower School is often likened to a village of children. Nestled in a residential neighborhood not far from Harvard Square, it is an oasis of green grass and playgrounds; where there is room to run as well as to roam inquisitively. The developmentally based physical space provides a great metaphor for the commitment to a broad, developmentally based curriculum found at the Lower School. Academically, students move at a pace that feels right to them, a pace that allows them to begin to build a genuine love of learning, not of rote memorization. Emphasis is placed on creativity and inclusion; we respect and cultivate the power and wonder of childhood.

Community. That is the essential spirit which makes the Lower School a wonderful place to teach and learn. It is what happens when 4th, 5th, and 6th graders meet once a month with their "buddies" in Beginner, Kindergarten, and First Grade - one side thrilled to be looked up to, the other side just as thrilled to be looking up. It is a blur of eager hands building birdhouses, the cacophony of the playground, the close working partnership among teachers, parents, and children. Community is something we all do for each other, and is what makes the Lower School a place for children to stretch, explore, and flourish.

QUOTES

“What do I want Beginners to learn in their first year? Some practical things, like why we have numbers, and what letters do, and how to be part of a group, a scholarly group. But most of all I want them to learn that school is a wonderful, wonderful place.”
–Beginners teacher

“Every year there are things that kids in my class write that I wish I had written. One of the responsibilities of the teacher is to feed that flame – this moment when they feel so excited and empowered about what their brains can do. If you don't feed it, it goes out.”
-Lower School teacher
