Mathematics & Computer Science at BB&N

At BB&N, math education is a journey of discovery and understanding that prepares students to tackle complex challenges in the world. The program provides a strong foundation in computation, logic, and spatial reasoning, while also teaching critical thinking, problem-solving, and data analysis skills. Students develop a deep understanding of the subject matter by applying what they’ve learned to real-world problems. BB&N equips students to be mathematical thinkers, problem solvers, and lifelong learners.

Curricula

Lower School students are introduced to mathematical concepts through concrete, symbolic, and abstract learning experiences. To increase understanding and retention, the curriculum develops students’ written and oral communication skills, while balancing larger conceptual understandings with specific skills and procedural fluency. The Middle School curriculum emphasizes problem-solving in multiple ways, encouraging students to learn from mistakes, become flexible thinkers, and explain their reasoning. The Upper School Mathematics and Computer Science curriculum focuses on depth of understanding, with emphasis on the “why” over the “how.” Multiple pathways through the curriculum are offered, and students are placed in classes where they will be appropriately challenged and supported. Course offerings include four AP classes (Computer Science A, Statistics, and Calculus AB and BC) and electives beyond the AP curricula. Students also have the opportunity to engage in competitive Math and Robotics teams.
