Lower School Launches a Week of Winter Music
This week the Lower School kicked off a season of concerts across the three BB&N campuses, with performances by grades B-5 and the brand new 6th-grade chorus. The older students got the winter festivities started on Wednesday morning, while the younger grades launched a day of music on Friday that the Upper School took over for their Winter Extravaganza later in the evening.
On a dreary Wednesday morning, students taught by new music teacher Joshua DeWitt brightened the day with cohesive selections across the grades focusing on a theme of growing up and acceptance. From seasonal selections like “White Winter Hymnal” to popular songs like “Something Just Like This,” students used movement and storytelling to craft a rich sound.
For the first time, the new 6th-grade chorus performed for families. Usually, students in their final year at the Lower School wait to perform until the spring musical, but this year, there was such a love of singing that Mr. DeWitt created a special choir that meets twice a week. Thanks to the efforts of students and teachers, the concert closed with a massive song about unity performed by grades 3-6, choreographed for the 3rd-graders by students Nathaniel E. and Joon L.
On a considerably sunnier Friday morning, students in grades B-2 took to the stage with their teacher, Sarah Zur. Their performance was full of movement and props, including warm gloves to keep the hands of the 1st-graders warm! Other highlights included singing and dancing along to Ella Fitzgerald and librarian Heather Lee playing the guitar with the 2nd-graders.
The Lower School students provided a scintillating start to the holiday season across BB&N for the whole community. Thank you to the facilities and the technology departments for helping set up and take down the concert!
